Firstly can you introduce yourself please?
I’m Kyle “dest” Needham, 20 years old and from south east England. I currently play for unique-esports in quakelive and appear occasionally on lvl^tv as the “Impressionist” as it were, oh and I’m not so great at interviews!
Quakers are known to be quite the pretty boys; many top players have originated from sporting backgrounds, why do you play competitive games?
I am quite the pretty boy indeed :D have you seen my hair? I have always been a pretty active person, I’ve won a few cups for football, mainly 5-a-side because it takes a lot of endurance, tennis and etc. But I wouldn’t say that’s really rubbed off much on gaming. I’ve always tried to just play for the fun of it, Quake in-particular I’ve always come back to after any other game (Quake 4, Warsow, CSS, COD4, WC3, UT to name a few) that I’ve played because it’s just such an enjoyable game, the competitive side of things has only really taken my interest in Quakelive playing real high skill gaming.
Which quake did you start with, and how have you ended up playing quake live?
Well I had a brief experience in Quake 2 when I was like 9 or 10 years of age because my parents played it, but I only really started properly playing Quake 3 as the first online game to really take my interest and I must’ve been around 11-12 years old, so I have played the game a very long time and because I was so young when starting clans etc didn’t interest me a great deal.
So it's fair to say you have a lot of FPS experience, do you also play any other games in your spare time?
I still play CSS, COD6 and L4D2 every now and then, but these games I only play for fun, though I’d quite like the idea of playing competitively in COD6.
The majority of you all play for your nations in either TDM or CTF, is there any particular reason as to why you haven’t focused more on the 1v1 scene?
Well, the MODS that I played before QuakeLive in Quake 3 were always team games, RA3, CCTF and CTFS mainly, so I guess that team game style has suited me more. Those MODS never had the typical duelling game type so It never interested me, It was only till quake 4 after 5-6 years of quake 3 that I even played my first duel and saw pro duellers playing on streams. So I guess at that point I felt that there really is a side of Quake that I’ve been missing out on. That’s not to say though that I haven’t competed before now, I’ve got a vast amount of high level results spreading from Quake 3 – to Quake 4 and even to other games such as UT and CSS. Back to the point though, TDM and CTF I find a lot more enjoyable, and I’m basically learning as I go along, though I have the CTF experience the CCTF was a lot different, CCTF had a grapple hook and runes, bringing new elements into the game making it harder in my opinion, but then that’s not to say CTF is easy just less to think about overall and you could say it takes more skill to escape without the grapple hook. TDM I’ve literally just started playing since closed beta of QuakeLive and I’m competing with the UK team in TDM and CTF already so I’ve been lucky and proven myself early on and it’s a great privilege to play for your nation.
What are your plans for after the nation season? Which events do you hope to play in and how well do you think you can do?
Well it’s hard to say what will come about; I pretty much want to compete in whatever I can get into, cups and leagues, there’s no particular cup or league that I’m gagging to play as such. Perhaps I’ll even give duel a proper go for smiles. Hopefully I can perform well in all the cups and leagues I play in, style has faith in me so I should have faith in myself, I think unique can bag at least top 3 in CTF, but It will be tough since a few top level clans are returning and the team itself I’m fairly new.
It is fair to say that TDM and CTF often fall short of the LAN call, why do you think this is?
Personally I find these game types more fun to watch, but it sounds bias obviously because I’ve never taken a shine to duel, so I’m not really sure myself.
Quakecon?
Setting the bar very high there, but it’s achievable with the right backing and team that really can go far. It’s all practise, dedication and I guess desire in some ways if you want to be good at something you try hard and prove it.
Thank you Kyle for taking the time to do this interview. I would not classify you has a bad interview subject. Are there any last words or shout-outs that you would like to give to our audience?
I'd like to give a shoutout to Antec, Panther 4Ever and Redux Energy, unique-esports and anyone for believing in me. Finally I'm at the level I think I've deserved.
Special thanks to nVc from Lvl^ for conducting this interview. |
